Birthday Cake for the Jun Babies

I recently baked a cake - Cranberry Almond Cake for my three friends in my group whose birthday falls in Jun.

I know..... looks kinda scary huh... partly cos I was in a rush.....went to Sembawang MRT station for that famous shop that sells all the ingredients and stuffs (like the maroon tray in the pic with a transparent cover) only to realise that that outlet has since closed.
No choice as I still need the cover+tray+candles etc and so I rushed down to Jurong East where I know there's another outlet.
The recipe for the cake is actually the same as the one found here. I just substituted carrots with cranberries known for it's antioxidant properties and I used Almonds instead of walnuts or pecans. Oh and as suggested by a contributor at the recipe website, I used one cup brown sugar + one cup white sugar instead 2 cups of white sugar. Pretty positive response from those who attended the party and ate it......normally a cake this size will have leftovers but this round they totally 'cleaned' it up. Maybe well they were hungry as we had not had our dinner yet when we cut the cake. Hope they were not patronising me. :)
Decorated the cake with 3 gooseberries (one for each birthday)...heehee.

Everyone should have a friend like 'Charlotte'

SATC (spoiler alert) - do not read further if you have not watched SATC and have the intention to do so.
One of the scenes that is etched on my mind is (the expression on her face) that when Charlotte said "NO!" to Mr Big after Carrie smashed her bouquette of white roses at him and he wanted to explain things further with Carrie. Two questions popped up.
One - will Kristin Davis be nominated if not win a best actress award for that?
and
Two - everyone (myself included) needs a friend like Charlotte. I wonder if currently will any of my friends stand up for me and tell whom they see is hurting me a big "NO!"
Anyone?

Double Standard? but who's the one with it?

It was reported that the Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS) would not be having shark's fin soup on it's menu but revealed that high rollers at the resort may still get it prepared for them.

A few readers of TODAY have express their displeasure for what appears to be double standards. While they applaud the RWS effort, they also questioned why would they still serve it if requested by high rollers.

Their main concern was that shark's fin are harvested in a cruel way in which the fins are cut off the shark's body before the sharks are thrown back into the sea to die a slow and painful death.
Firstly, there were already reports that such method of harvesting may not be true and even suggested that the video which purportedly showed the harvesting method was alledgedly filmed purposely to discourage the buying of fins. The article further questioned why would the fisherman discard the shark's body just like that after much effort in capturing the shark and they would also stand to profit from the sale of the shark's body as well.

Secondly, how different is the cruelty in killing a shark than the slaughtering of say a cow? If people are really compassionate as they claim to be, shouldn't they then advocate that beef or all sorts of meat be off the menu as well? Let's not also forget that A kilogram of beef is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution than driving for 3 hours while leaving all the lights on back home. (This is among the conclusions of a study by Akifumi Ogino of the National Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science in Tsukuba, Japan, and colleagues, which has assessed the effects of beef production on global warming, water acidification and eutrophication, and energy consumption. The team looked at calf production, focusing on animal management and the effects of producing and transporting feed. By combining this information with data from their earlier studies on the impact of beef fattening systems, the researchers were able to calculate the total environmental load of a portion of beef.

Their analysis showed that producing a kilogram of beef leads to the emission of greenhouse gases with a warming potential equivalent to 36.4 kilograms of carbon dioxide. It also releases fertilising compounds equivalent to 340 grams of sulphur dioxide and 59 grams of phosphate, and consumes 169 megajoules of energy (Animal Science Journal, DOI: 10.1111/j.1740-0929.2007.00457.x).)

SATC - Sex and The City Movie

Just back from catching the long awaited SATC - Sex and The City Movie.

Ok if you have watched it too, good for u. If you have not, I won't spoil it for you by telling you that eventually Carrie will.....................just kidding.

I went for the extended version......the 175 mins - 30 mins was more of like "The making of....SATC" rather than a recap of what had happened, then 145 mins for the movie itself. Must alert those going for this 175 mins version that it actually starts with the 30mins - Intro-plus-making-of before the commercials come on. So you should be seated in the theatre on time so you wont' miss it as I think it does starts punctually. When the adverts come on, then you can go to the restroom if you need to cos there' really lotsa lotsa lotsa adverts....till the point I feel like shouting 'Enuff with the adverts already....."

Quite a few emotions hit me whilst watching the movie..........The actresses are great, the scripts pretty well written and I do hear a few sniffles throughout the movie. A friend whom I dragged to watch it (as he originally wanted to watch Narnia) also enjoyed the moive.

Sharon Stone(d?) Thinks May 12 Earthquake in China is due to Karma

Sharon Stone's "karma" is having an instant effect on her movie-star status in China. The 50-year-old actress suggested last week that the devastating May 12 earthquake there could have resulted from bad karma over the government's treatment of Tibet.
Sharon Stone has annoyed the owner of the leading Chinese cinema chain to the point where he's pledged not to show her films.
Today reports that Christian Dior which has a modelling contract with Stone , said it had decided to "immediately cancel and stop any advertisements, marketing campaigns and commercial activities associated wtih Sharon Stone.
Mdm Stone - how's that for Karma?
You would have thought that her wisdom would commensurate with her age.......

In her response to the media query at Festival de Cannes on if she is aware of the earthquake in China and she suggested the devastating May 12 earthquake there could have been the result of bad "karma" -- China's treatment of ethnic Tibetans and their exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama - whom Sharon claims to be a personal friend of. I can imagine the frown on the Dalai Lama's face when he hears about that.

Bye Bye Mr Big Fat Ugly Liar

Recently my office said adios to a GM and he is aka Mr Big Fat Ugly Liar.

He always like to think he's very charming and handsome. Oh and he likes to once in a while boast about him ever taken part in some marathon organised by a bank here. The reaction most of us have on that is 'yah, as the jarga for the water point' is it.

He's greedy and will always be there where there is food. He also likes to pull rank over small matters like when we received a nice hamper and he'll say 'wah nice box ah, after the food-stuff is distributed, I want the box......who dares to fight with me over the box? here only one person's position who is higher than me...." Like that win liao loh (but there's been another GM who is worse I guess....she will gladly 'absorp' the whole hamper.)

Most people don't like him, with the exception of a few ball lickers. pui! These are the people who even bothered to give him farewell lunch. Faintz........a few of them asked me if I like to join in.....my reaction? - I rather take my money to buy food to feed stray dogs....at least the dog will wag it's tail.
The reason for his departure? He has been made to report to his nemesis - who was recently promoted to deputy director....wahaha......Heaven have eyes.
He boastfully declared to us whilst announcing his departure that he'll be going over to the next company as CFO woh. When he was giving us a long speech in his room about his intention of leaving he even feint concern about me - for that he was the one who 'invited' me over to join his team but now he is leaving blah blah blah....and I was like 'shut up you big fat ugly liar and let me go out and spread the good news!'
Anyway my sympathies to the next company and staff he will be joining.

Mr Know It All

Have you ever had a conversation with someone who's always quick to respond with

'oh you mean now then you know? that's old news'

'I knew that long ago liao'

'that album was already released in Jan'

With an attitude like 'oh you retard...','I'm Mr Know it all'. Doesn't that just turn you off?

This attitude or type of response may be beneficial if when put to use in the work place to impress one's boss. However it makes that person a lousy conversationist. Since you already know so many things, I will think I probably won't need / like to say too much to you.

Like recently when I tried to share with someone over msn about Leona Lewis's Bleeding Love (whom recently performed on AI) and that someone's responded with 'oh that's song so long ago liao, her album out in Jan - now her other song more updated one is 'Better In Time'.

I just wanted to share the song that I thought was very nice, a song which I thought was pretty well written and such songs are so rare nowadays and you had to tried to show off that you're very up to date on the English song scene. hmmmm. So what if you think Better In Time is more up to date? It's my preference which song I like.

Also recently someone asked me what movie I think I'll most likely want to watch....I qouted "Funny Games" and after he checked out the website he commented that "just saw the trailer, quite sick actually, storyline quite shallow".....fren if you dunno how to appreciate such movies just say so, it's not shallow. Maybe it's you who is shallow.

Bleeding ....Bleeding Love

"Bleeding Love"

Closed off from love
I didn't need the pain
Once or twice was enough
And it was all in vain
Time starts to pass
Before you know it you're frozen

But something happened
For the very first time with you
My heart melts into the ground
Found something true
And everyone's looking round
Thinking I'm going crazy

But I don't care what they say
I'm in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don't know the truth
My heart's crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open

Trying hard not to hear
But they talk so loud
Their piercing sounds fill my ears
Try to fill me with doubt
Yet I know that the goal
Is to keep me from falling

But nothing's greater
Than the rush that comes with your embrace
And in this world of loneliness
I see your face
Yet everyone around me
Thinks that I'm going crazy, maybe, maybe

But I don't care what they say
I'm in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don't know the truth
My heart's crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open

And it's draining all of me
Oh they find it hard to believe
I'll be wearing these scars
For everyone to see

I don't care what they say
I'm in love with you
They try to pull me away
But they don't know the truth
My heart's crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open and I

Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love

What a Strange World We Live In

Today we're living in a society where sale of chewing gum - something beneficial and therapeutic is banned. However smoking or the sale of cigarettes is not banned.

Someone attempting suicide will be charged for attempting to take his / her own life.
Smoking which is harmful in many ways - not to mention how second hand smoke is even worse and the smoker gets away with it.

What a strange world we live in.

Taiwan Celebrities Criticise Singaporean English

Huh!

That's my first reaction when I first viewed that clip. Who are they to mock us?

However I must say there was another episode where they did criticize themselves and point out their own mistakes amongst themselves.

Actually the issue here is not who is superior than who in what.

The issue here is : Is it alright to mock others - on national TV - about what they perceive as 'weird' and 'funny' without having a good understanding of the culture and background of the country in question.

Do we do that on our national TV?

And well, after some 1,000 over netizens's complaints later / they did apologise.....or did they really (considering that only a few posted the apology in their personal blogs) ?

Maybe if and when that (like to dress like pregnant) teacher next visits SG, our customs officer can invite her to spend half a day or more if necessary to teach us her way of pronouncing PREGNANT before clearing her to enter SG. Maybe we throw in complimentary hearing check for her since she admitted that her hearing got problem.

Maybe we should - like what Mr Brown suggested - learn their English like their reporter below

Long time no post

It's been so long since I last posted........I think facebook.com is taking up much of my time.

Much has came and gone......my birthday, Chritmas, saying adios to 2007. Soon we'll be saying hello to the year of the RAT. That also means I'll be 36 soon. Unbelievable.
